Texas Asbestos Renovation Checklist

Know what to gather.
Know what to ask.

Answer what you can about the building and the work. “Not sure” is a fine answer.

For Texas homes, rental properties and commercial or public buildings. It keeps how the building is used and the whole project in view while you prepare questions for an assessor.

Use the Washington checklist
01 Your project

Include the whole project, even if it involves more than one building or owner.

02 Materials and work areas

Pick the materials your project may touch. Only a lab test can say whether they contain asbestos.

Use what you already know. Do not disturb material, enter an affected area or collect a sample to complete this checklist.

03 Existing records

Keep the actual report to share with your assessor. No upload is needed here.

What changes in Texas?

Texas DSHS has different rules for private residences, public buildings and other facilities. A house that is part of a larger renovation or demolition project is treated differently from a single residence. Tell us about the whole project before counting on an exemption or a notice deadline.

What the checklist cannot tell you

Appearance and a building’s age cannot confirm asbestos content. Look at the materials and the limits of the planned work together. If a project changes, ask whether its existing survey still covers the work.
